Texas Deregulation History

TEXAS ENERGY CHOICE

Energy Deregulation gives citizens in Texas the power to choose their supplier.

One of the benchmarks of the successful free market in Texas is the range of choice provided to customers. Choice can be viewed both in terms of the number of firms active in the market as well as the variety of products those firms offer to consumers. In the first decade of electric deregulation in Texas, the market experienced dramatic changes in both metrics.

DEREGULATED SERVICES

With competition, energy suppliers sell energy commodities to you and provide functions such as customer service, pricing structure, and billing options. These companies purchase electricity from competing power plants, and electricity is delivered to your home or business over the poles and wires of your local Utility Company.

Energy Providers compete for your business by offering lower prices, renewable energy options, added customer service benefits or other incentives. With energy deregulation, you now have the ability to choose the Provider that best fits your needs. If you do not choose an Energy Provider, your energy service will be provided by a company affiliated with your local wire company

No matter which energy supplier provides your service, the Public Utility Commission continues to enforce customer protections and regulate the delivery of electricity to ensure it is delivered safely and reliably by the local wires company.

Energy Deregulation gives energy consumers the option and the “power to choose” their Energy provider in deregulated markets as permitted by the state public utilities governing body.
